Wow. What a weekend. 2022 Western PA Speedweek Champion.
An event that has been brought back to life by Tyler Biechner. Supported by local partners such as JS Bova Excavating and Shaeffers Specialized Lubricants. An event that consists of running 5 races in 5 days at tracks local to the Western PA area.
Wednesday at Mercer Raceway Park, Thursday at PPMS, Friday at Lernerville Speedway, Saturday at Sharon Speedway, and Sunday at Tri-City Raceway Park. We have won at every single track except PPMS, where we have multiple 2nds and haven’t raced at since 2017. So to be honest, our confidence is pretty high during this week, knowing we can run well and have a shot at the Speedweek Title. We ran 2nd in the title last year until a wreck on Sunday dropped us to 4th.
Wednesday and Thursday rained out, so our week started at Lernerville Friday. We qualified 2nd overall, ran 2nd in our heat race, but pulled the worst possible feature pill and started 10th. We didn’t have the car to win, ill be honest. But the race came to us nonetheless. 4th spun, 2nd broke, 3rd place got a LR flat after contact with us on the back stretch, and the leader wrecked while taking the white flag. I was a 5th place car that had enough luck to win. A $3000 victory and a solid points lead to start out Western PA Speedweek.
The rest of the weekend was different. We were fast and we earned our wins.
Saturday at Sharon, we qualified 3rd in our group, finished 2nd in the heat race and drew a 4th starting spot in the feature. We ran 4th for the beginning portion of the race. On a lap 14 restart, it was time to get to the lead. Within 2 laps, we were in 1st. The rest of the race went nonstop, the car drove extremely well, we checked out, and won back to back Western PA Speedweek races, this time by over 3 seconds.
Our adrenaline high had us wired all night long. We finished prep and maintenance at 5am Sunday morning. Grabbed a few hours of sleep and drove to Tri-City Raceway Park for the last night of Speedweek. We qualified 4th quickest in our group, which caught the invert and started us on the pole for the heat race. We won that with a very comfortable car. I told my father after the heat race that I had literally 0 complaints. The car was fantastic. Now we just needed 1 lucky pill draw. We got it. A young fan did the honors and pulled us #1 for the feature. We led all 30 laps and won the finale of Western PA Speedweek for another sweet $3000. We swept the entire weekend and won the Speedweek title.
It was one of the best weekends of my life. We finally put together a good 3 day stretch of success. Our winnings were a huge boost to our program after our big wreck at Port Royal on May 21st. We have a long way to go but I sure hope we can transition this speed into even bigger shows coming up against the Allstars at Lernerville, Sharon, and Port Royal.
